Academy Sounds is our school radio project, currently funded by Headstart Kent.  We have been working together with Sheppey Matters community radio station – Sheppey FM 92.2 – building the project each year.  We have our own radio studio with equipment and software to record radio broadcasts and to deliver entertainment in the cafeteria during school lunchtimes but our aim eventually is to be able to broadcast digitally throughout the school and maybe beyond.  The project is open to Year 9 students to learning about radio protocols and Ofcom guidelines, music selection, script writing, interview techniques and sound editing.  Their skills are put to the test at the end of their training when they visit Sheppey FM and deliver their live broadcasts.  The live shows are themed and have covered a variety of issues including Mental Health, Remembrance Day, Anti-Bullying, War on Waste and many more.  The students gain valuable employability skills including confidence, public speaking, team-work and research.  We’re very proud that the Mental Health series of shows was awarded Silver in the Community Radio Awards.
