Independent Learning

Intent (why?)

As humans, we survive through habits.  Hard work and good study habits are qualities that should be nurtured, and over time will become stronger and more automatic.  Independent study is a habit that we encourage from Year 7.  The formation of strong independent study skills motivates students to take ownership of their learning, and is particularly important during exam periods in Years 10,11,12 and 13.  These are habits are built on and strengthened, enabling young people to be prepared for further studies and adult lives.

Implementation (how?)

Show My Homework

As a school, we use Show My Homework to upload and log completion of independent study set each week.  Please check regularly and encourage your child to become independent and responsible for their own learning and success.

If you have any queries regarding Show My Homework, please email smhw@oasisisleofsheppey.org

Bedrock Vocabulary

Two sessions of 20 minutes per week on Bedrock will drastically increase a young person's understanding and use of tier two vocabulary.  Tier two consists of high frequency words that occur across a variety of domains.  That is, these words occur often in mature language situations such as adult conversations and literature, and therefore strongly influence speaking and reading.  It is a fact that those who are vocabulary rich have a greater access to opportunities and ultimately, success.  All student have logins to Bedrock and are encouraged to use this resource.  Students should contact their mentor or English teacher if they need a reminder of their login.

Hegarty Maths

The Maths Department set assignments for students to complete on Hegarty Maths so the foundations are secured for success.  Through online teaching, students can move at their own pace and ensure they have solidified knowledge being taught in class and retrieve learning previously learnt so it is not lost.  All students in all year groups have logins but can ask their Maths teacher should they need a reminder.

Seneca Learning

Metacognition and understanding how to learn has been proven to have a high effect rate on students' progress.  We therefore encourage all students to actively use the 6 core strategies in their own independent study schedules:
