Literacy

Good literacy skills are essential to enable students to fully access all the curriculum, reach their full potential and be successful in life. Extending, developing and improving students' literacy skills are key focus areas for the Academy.

Our Academy now has a FREE online library for all students to access! The library can be accessed via the website (https://oasisacademyisleofsheppey.eplatform.co) or via the app: ePlatform by Wheelers

To log in, students will need to use their school email (firstname.surname@oasisisleofsheppey.org) and their usual password. This is compatible with iOS, Android and Microsoft devices. If using the app, simply find our library by typing in ‘Isle of Sheppey’ and it will take you to our sign in page. The online library is continually being updated so check back regularly to see if there’s something new to catch your eye.

Students can borrow the latest print books and audiobooks with over 2000 books available for students to read right now! Students can access this wherever, whenever, all summer. Some of the titles include Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Warrior Cats, Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, The Hate U Give, Dear Evan Hansen. You can also find books by Jacqueline Wilson, Rick Riordan, Cassandra Clare and more!

Accelerated Reader

The development of literacy skills is fundamental to all areas of learning, enabling students to access the wider curriculum.

All Year 7 and 8 students at Oasis Academy Isle of Sheppey are enrolled in the Accelerated Reader program, a computer based program designed to aid their progression as independent readers. Students can earn awards and prizes for their classes based on the number of books and words that they read across the academic year.

There are three main elements to Accelerated Reader:

  1. Books linked to the scheme are graded according to their difficulty level and number of words.
  2. Students complete a STAR Reading Assessment; a twenty minute on-line exercise to determine their reading level. It is then possible to match students with the most suitable range of books.
  3. After finishing each book, students access the computer program and take a quiz to provide instant feedback on how well they have read and understood it. Data is stored, keeping a running total of words read and quizzes passed.

Young people are deemed to make the most progress if they read independently for at least 30 minutes each day. Part of this time is available at school but, in addition, students should read for 15-20 minutes at home. To access Accelerated Reader at home, please use this link: https://ukhosted120.renlearn.co.uk/2841084

All students are welcome in the school library to read quietly, borrow books and, for those in younger year groups, take Accelerated Reader quizzes. For anyone struggling to access Accelerated Reader, please contact teresa.duey@oasisisleofsheppey.org who can provide up to date login details.

Students in Year 7 and Year 8 also have access to MyOn, an online library with over 6000 books that are also linked to quizzes on Accelerated Reader. Students can log in here: https://www.myon.co.uk/login/index.html

Login details have been communicated home, however if anyone is unable to find their details then please email our librarian Teresa.duey@oasisisleofsheppey.org who will be able to help.
