Retrieval Practice…In Practice!

All students have been learning how ‘retrieval practice’ can support the long term memory and aid success in learning and exams through assemblies, in mentoring, and across lessons.

In some subjects, the ‘do now’ at the start of all lesson activities upon entry encourage young people to review knowledge previously learnt and retrieve it.

Knowledge organisers are now being used in many subjects and are particularly useful in exam groups. Students are given a knowledge organiser with the key knowledge they need to learn for homework and are tested on it. At home, students should be using strategies such as ‘look, cover, write, check’; mind-maps; writing notes and checking for gaps to ensure they are retaining this key information.

Well done to those who have engaged so well with retrieval practice so far! Keep at it and you’ll find your long-term memory growing and becoming more successful!
